Travel along the Via Aurelia and the highway, we arrive in the valley of CERVETERI, where approximately 2000 Etruscan tombs still stand, among the most famous in the world. We enter the necropolis where we find the most prominent existing examples of tombs from the IX to the II century B.C.
Then drive to the lake of BRACCIANO, The town is located on the top of a large hill, where you will visit Castello Odescalchi, (still owned and occupied by the Odescalchi family). The ancient Latin name for Bracciano was Arcenum, which means “fortified.” Bracciano derived its name from its position high on top of a hill, where the surrounding mountains and the lake and provided natural protection from invaders.
Lake Bracciano is a volcanic lake with black, sandy shores extending over 57 square kms, with a perimeter of 33 kms. It can be completely toured by car via the panoramic road, which circles the entire lake. This lake is over 400 feet deep, (Jacques Cousteau failed to reach the bottom during an expedition in the 1960's!) and has two drainage points: The Annone River and the Paulus Aqueduct, which feed the lake and keep the level of water constant. The lake is also fed by underwater hot springs, which help to ensure a temperature during summer of around 70 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Your tour will continues to the medieval village of CERI, settled on a tufa rock spur of volcanic origin. A crown of crenellated walls embraces Ceri’s ancient houses facing the tiny central square, where you will see Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary and the austere Palace of the noble family Torlonia. A combination of remarkable archeological, historical and naturalistic interest forms the background of this charming agricultural settlement, creating altogether a picture of rare beauty. We find ourselves in the one of the greatest archeological areas of Europe, the central settlement of the Etruscan civilization. Ceri is also an ideal starting point for other desirable itineraries – e.g. a drive beginning with the castles along the seaside of Palo and Santa Severa towards the fortress of Michelangelo and the harbor of Civitavecchia.
In Ceri you will enjoy a delicious lunch in a local restaurant.... Wine and Olive Oil tasting on this itinerary can be also done at Cento Corvi. For more details on Cento Corvi, see http://www.casalecentocorvi.it/.
Your driver/guide will pick you up from the port in the morning and will take you back to the dock in the afternoon.
