The Tuscan wine production is divided into various categories, according to different levels of quality.
The most common grade of wine is what we call "Vini da Tavola", which can be found every day on Italian family tables. The next grade is the IGT wines (a Indicazione Geografica %Tipica). The third highest grade (the greater part of Tuscan wine production) is called Vine DOC (a Denominazione di Origine Controllata). Finally, there are the superior grade wines, the DOCG wines, (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), like the Chianti, Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, the Vernaccia of San Gimignano, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Tuscany is a natural wine growing region, and its climate, soil and the very old tradition of wine making combine to make these some of the finest wines in the world at any grade. The wines are as personal as a name, as different as the colors of the rainbow, and a part of the Italian life as it has been for almost 3,000 years.
The Etruscans of North-Central Italy, who created one of the peninsula's earliest civilization, left evidence of wine making. The Greeks, who soon after established themselves in the South, gave Italy the name Enotria (the land of wine). For centuries wine cultivation has been a tradition and the primary labor of the Italian farmers; this is still true today; a large part of the population is engaged in the wine industry. We choose restaurants and wineries for their quality as well as scenic locations, however if there is a particular place you have heard of and would like to visit, please let us know and we will work with you to schedule your tour there.
We can also organize personalized wine tasting tours to some of the most famous wine producing estates around Tuscany, including the estate that received the award for "The Italian Wine Maker of the Year for 2002".
