Orvieto, Todi and Assisi
ORVIETO is a picturesque hill town in Umbria that soars above the surrounding countryside characterized by vineyards and olive groves. It was once a flourishing Etruscan town (ancient Volsinii) between the 7th and 3rd Century B.C., as exemplified by the Etruscan necropolis of the Crocifisso del Tufo. In the 11th and 12th Century the city developed to a Communal government and expanded its rule over the surrounding territory. Orvieto has preserved its medieval appearance with beautiful Romanesque and Gothic buildings, notably the Duomo, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic. Orvieto is also famous for its wine, pottery and artisan shops.
TODI with its historical monuments, the medieval atmosphere and the unique beauty of its countryside is a real jewel in the heart of Italy. The ancient town, according to the tradition, was founded in about 2000 BC by the Umbrians, an Italic population after whom the Umbria region was named.
ASSISI, The tour starts with a visit to the Church of Santa Chiara, on the site where St. Francis was born, then a walk through the narrow streets that lead to the Basilica of St. Francis, which contains masterpieces by the fathers of the Italian art, Giotto and Cimabue.
