Messina and Tindaris

Messina and Tindaris

On this day excursion you can explore one of the most important cities in Messina, it was the most important port of departure for European knights on their way to the Crusades and remained the second most important city of Sicily until the seventeenth century. You have the morning to explore the main sites, square and the cathedral, where Richard the Lionheart in 1190 en route to a Crusade, was erected during the twelfth century Norman dominion. Most of the present cathedral is actually a reconstruction, the original building having been almost entirely destroyed by earthquakes; a few segments of the original walls remain.

You will continue on in the afternoon to the Ancient Tindaris, located on high ground overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast. Tindaris was settled during about 1500 BC) and during the time of the Romans it became an important city and colony by Empire Augustus. Following the fall of the Empire and the arrival of Christianity, its importance continued, and in the 6th century it became a pilgrimage city to visit. You have the rest of the day to explore this lovely town, see it’s amphitheater from 4th century BC and walk the narrow medieval streets before heading back to the pot.

The English speaking driver will pick you up from the port and take you back as well in the afternoon.
