Hidden Rome
Enjoy a different Rome, away from the more touristic places.
Your English speaking driver will pick you in front of your ship and drive you to the Appian Way.
This is the first and most famous street build by the Romans, which ran from Rome all the way to the “heel” of Italy extending over 350 miles. The original paving stones can still be found in this part of the Appian Way.
Your next stop will be at the Catacombs, a maze of underground burial places dating to the first century AD. Due to overcrowding and a shortage of land, Romans of all religions, including the Christians, adopted this burial method.
Entrance to the Catacombs is € 8 per person and tickets can be bought on location. You will be escorted inside by the Catacomb Staff since it would be dangerous to wander the site on your own.
Afterwards you’ll head to the Park of the Aqueducts, where the ruins of an impressive aqueduct are still visible today. You’ll have the chance to walk along it, enjoying the beautiful countryside setting. A chance not many tourists get.
You’ll have time for a typical Italian lunch before driving back through the city center, passing by the Baths of Caracalla and driving up the Aventine Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome. Here, you will discover one of Rome’s secrets, although not a very well kept one; the Keyhole. By looking inside you’ll see a perfectly framed view of Saint Peter’s.
From here you will cross to the other side of the River Tiber, to reach Trastevere, the most bohemian area in the city. The beautiful Medieval Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere will be your next stop.
You’ll end this day in Rome, at the top of the Janiculum Hill, the highest of the seven hills of Rome, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city before heading back to your ship in Civitavecchia.
