Tivoli gardens and villas
This tour has been designed for those who have already seen the famous attractions and beauties of Rome and are looking for a diverse and exceptional excursion. After approx. 2 hours’ drive through the beautiful surrounding valleys you will arrive at Tivoli. The area was a favourite resort of the ancient Roman travellers.
Your day starts with a visit to the largest palace ever constructed in the Roman Empire; Hadrian’s Villa which is covering an area of. 250 acres of which much is still unexcavated. The villa was the greatest Roman example of an Alexandrian garden, recreating a sacred landscape. Here the most important sites to visit are the Grand Thermal bath, Theatre, the main Villa Pool and Artificial Grotto which are the most well-preserved parts.
Then quick drive to the upper level of the town of Tivoli, to the Villa d’Este, where the finest Baroque garden (and one of Italy’s most often-painted and photographed), is located. A trip to Villa d’Este is a magic journey into Baroque times. Beautiful gardens, hedge mazes and hundreds of fountains are the prime attraction of this gorgeous summer villa built in 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito D’Este, son of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia. The courtyard adjacent the present entrance of the villa was the cloister of a Benedectine convent, later incorporated into the monumental building of the villa.
